The Up Center employees sometimes need to use their expertise in the most tragic of circumstances. In March 2008, our counselors were called to the Thalia Garden Apartments in Virginia Beach after two S.L. Nusbaum Realty employees were murdered and two others were injured by a resident. The Up Center’s counselors, who are experts on dealing with grief and trauma, helped the families of the victims, the other employees and the residents of the apartment complex. S.L. Nusbaum’s Controller and Senior Vice President Virginia Batteen Hawks later wrote a letter of thanks to The Up Center that stated in part: “I want to thank your counselors from the bottom of my heart. I watched so many people seek the support of your team, including our senior managers. What a magnificent blessing The Up Center has been to my Nusbaum family. Thank you for helping us at one of the lowest times in our history.”
